Tara’s Journey to Wellbeing Through The Carers Respite Programme
In November 2025, Tara joined the Carers Respite Programme at Bridgend Life Centre to rediscover a healthy balance between her career and caring for her mother. The programme’s professional replacement care offered Tara a vital opportunity to prioritise her own wellbeing.
Previously struggling to find “me-time,” Tara used this supportive space to focus on her health and move towards more positive daily habits. This much-needed respite has empowered her to invest in herself while ensuring her mother remains well-supported.
“It felt strange and even uncomfortable to step away from my caring role, even though replacement care was in place,” Tara admitted, highlighting the mental barrier many carers face when trying to prioritise their own needs.”
The Intervention: A Supportive Space to Recharge
The Carers Respite Programme offered Tara a vital lifeline. By providing a safe, supervised environment for her mother within the Centre, the programme allowed Tara to engage in mindfulness and physical activity without distraction. The facilitator and peer group created a non-judgmental atmosphere where Tara could finally address the neglect of her own health.
“Taking part gave me a break from my responsibilities and allowed me the space to think more clearly about my own life and our family life as a whole,” Tara explained. “I found it particularly valuable to share experiences and listen to the stories of other carers.”
The Outcome: Renewed Strength and Awareness
The impact on Tara’s lifestyle has been profound. Her pre- and post-programme questionnaires show a significant shift from zero physical activity to completing regular, gentle exercise at home. Beyond the physical gains, Tara has developed a “recharged” emotional outlook and a deeper understanding of the support entitlements available to her.
“The programme has been a huge support, helping me reduce stress and recharge both physically and emotionally,” Tara concluded. “It has made a real difference in helping me cope with my caring role and continue supporting my Mum in the best way I can.”
Now equipped with relaxation techniques and a network of peers, Tara is no longer at the bottom of her own priority list.
Halo’s Carer’s Respite Programme provides unpaid carers with the opportunity to improve their physical and mental wellbeing by participating in exercise, relaxation, and nutrition information sessions at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre and Bridgend Life Centre. While these sessions are available at both locations, participants also benefit from exclusive access to Halo Leisure’s toning suite located specifically at Bridgend Life Centre.
