From Isolation to Connection: How Halo’s Carers Respite Programme is Transforming Lives

For many unpaid carers, finding even a single hour of “me-time” can feel like an impossible task. The constant demands of caring for a loved one often lead to feelings of isolation and being “left in the dark”. However, a partnership between Halo Leisure, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, and the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board is changing that narrative through the Carers Respite Programme.

GD’s Story: Finding a Lifeline

The impact of this initiative is best seen through the eyes of its participants. GD, who cares for her husband, joined the programme at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre in February 2026 after a particularly difficult year. Before joining, GD rarely left her house, often feeling a sense of guilt and isolation.

“I don’t feel on my own anymore,” GD shared after completing the programme.

Through the programme, GD discovered a community of fellow carers who shared her struggles. She was able to attend weekly sessions because the programme arranged for free replacement care at her home—a vital service funded via the CTM Regional Partnership Board that allowed her to leave her husband in capable hands with total peace of mind.

More Than Just a Break

The Carers Respite Programme is a six-week journey designed to improve both physical and mental wellbeing. For GD and many others, the benefits have been life-altering:

  • Access to Vital Support: GD learned about her rights and was connected with the Alzheimer’s Society, who now provide home-based guidance she previously didn’t know existed.

  • Physical Health: GD now exercises five times a week and is utilizing a free 3-month Halo membership provided upon completion of the course.

  • Mental Resilience: By practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques learned in the sessions, GD now manages daily stress by taking moments to pause and breathe.

  • Equipment Assistance: The programme even helped GD obtain a wheelchair for her husband, further easing her caregiving journey.

Making a Measurable Difference

GD is just one of many success stories. The programme’s overall impact across Merthyr Tydfil and Bridgend County that highlights its necessity:

  • 100% of participants reported an improvement in their ability to manage their mental health.
  • 95% of participants felt more connected to other carers by the end of the six weeks.
  • 89% of participants are now exercising four or more times a week.
  • 145 hours of free replacement care were provided last year alone to remove barriers for carers.
