Autism Friendly Swimming

People, especially children on the autism spectrum are at a higher risk because they may seek isolation by fleeing and can be naturally drawn to water.

Accidental drowning is the leading cause of death in children with ASD under the age of 14.

Our pools make a range of adjustments to support swimmers with autism, helping to ensure that swimming lessons and sessions are accessible & enjoyable.

Autism Friendly Swimming Lessons for Children aged 4+

Halo's Ynysawdre Swimming Pool is now an Autism Swim approved centre.
  • Specially trained swimming teachers to support children with autism.
  • No public access allowing for a more relaxed experience.
  • Small group basis.
See for yourself why our autism friendly swimming lessons attract funding from BBC Children In Need and also national awards!

Committed to securing funding and resources

  • We are committed to securing funding and resources to roll these sessions out to other Halo pools.
  • To register your interest for future autism friendly swimming lessons or to get further information, please email: autism-swim@haloleisure.org.uk

SEND swimming sessions at Hereford Leisure Pool

Join us for our inclusive sessions designed for adults and children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities including autism.

We make the following small adjustments to create a welcoming, sensory friendly, gentle and relaxed pool experience:

  • No public announcements on the tannoy system (except in an emergency).
  • No music.
  • Lower capacity so fewer swimmers in the pool.
  • No jumping or diving.
  • No shouting or lifeguard whistles (except in an emergency).
  • Sloped entry to pool making access easier.

Reducing sensory distractions supports a feeling of safety, peace and calm which we hope will encourage people with additional needs including those with autism and their families to enjoy swimming in our lovely heated pool.
