Staying Active, Staying Connected: Frank and Jan’s Journey with Feel Good for Life
Frank and Jan began attending the Feel Good for Life (FGFL) programme in Hereford in November 2023, having first heard about it through Dementia Matters Here—a Herefordshire-wide independent charity that supports individuals affected by dementia or memory loss, along with their carers and families.
Before Jan’s diagnosis, the couple enjoyed an active and fulfilling retirement, often traveling and spending quality time together. Frank recalls noticing subtle changes in Jan’s behaviour about three years ago, something their daughter also observed. As her symptoms gradually worsened, the family realized it was time to seek support. Jan was diagnosed with dementia in 2022. In addition to memory loss, she also lives with hearing and other physical impairments.
Reflecting on the diagnosis, Frank says, “It’s life, isn’t it? Something was bound to happen to one of us sometime, I suppose. We have adjusted our life to it.”
With help from Mark, the Active Communities Coordinator, Frank and Jan were guided through the registration process and enrolled in FGFL. They attended the programme’s first session in Hereford and have been regular participants ever since.
At the time they joined, Jan rated both her physical and mental health as a 3 out of 5. As her primary carer, Frank acknowledges the emotional toll dementia has taken on their relationship. “It’s not easy. We’re not chatting the same as we used to. So in that way, it’s hard. But there are places like FGFL we can go. It’s super on a Thursday—we get help, and we meet other people and their carers. You make new friendships.”
Frank describes the programme as simple yet meaningful, crediting Mark with designing a wide range of engaging and enjoyable activities. “He dreams up marvelous things—singing, the bikes on the cycle track, afternoon tea with porcelain cups, and guest speakers. We also get private use of the gym and toning suite. We enjoy it all. And obviously it’s keeping us fit, because we’re exercising and interacting more.”
Although they attend other support groups, Frank and Jan consider FGFL one of their favourites. “It’s a more friendly bunch at Feel Good for Life. People come from different walks of life, and it’s great meeting new, interesting people.”
After six months with the programme, Jan rated her physical and mental health as a 4 out of 5—an encouraging improvement. When asked what they enjoy most, Frank and Jan highlight the sense of community and mental stimulation the sessions provide: “Meeting other people with similar issues, making new friends and socialising. The activities are varied and keep us mentally stimulated. The whole team are very supportive and that helps make it a lovely event.”
