Autism Friendly Swimming: Building Water Confidence

Discover how our Autism Friendly Swimming Programme at Ynysawdre Swimming Pool is making water sports accessible, safe, and enjoyable for neurodiverse swimmers.

Led by expert instructors, our tailored sessions feature an adjusted pool environment to support every swimmer’s needs. The lessons combine empathetic, highly adaptable teaching with clear visual and verbal demonstrations, helping swimmers build essential water safety skills, gain confidence, and enjoy the water comfortably alongside others.

The programme also empowers parents and carers with the practical knowledge and techniques needed to enjoy stress-free, safe family visits to the pool. As one local grandmother shared, the supportive setup gave her grandson the confidence to enter the pool independently and helped her safely take him swimming every week.

I wanted Ethan to have the opportunity to learn to swim.

We had tried another swimming school, but they were not equipped for children with ALN (Additional Learning Needs), and the class was not suitable.

The classes have been easy to access; the pool is local with friendly staff, and is already known to Ethan. The timings of the lessons work well, are simple to book onto and are a great value for money.

Ethan has learnt how to enter and exit a pool correctly and is able to pull himself out at the side. These skills alone show how much confidence he has gained and is now safer in any water.

All the teachers Ethan has had on the programme have been adaptable and empathetic with exceptional patience. They have stayed calm and reassuring, giving clear verbal and visual demonstrations. Ethan does not engage easily with other children, but he was happy to be in the pool alongside them.

Ethan is very happy being in the water. Since attending, he now goes into the pool with the teacher and I stay at the poolside. This is a huge achievement for Ethan to enter the water without me and to still be happy, feel safe and reassured whilst doing so is a triumph! With Ethan now having more confidence in the water and some basic safety knowledge, it will allow us as a family to visit other pools and go swimming more frequently.

As a carer of a child with autism, the sessions have taught me how to encourage and support Ethan in the pool. Since attending the autism swim programme, I now have the ability and confidence to safely take Ethan swimming every week. We go to quieter sessions and take the correct swimming aids (as shown and demonstrated by the teachers) with us to have a fun, safe and happy time at the pool.
