Flying the Flag: Paul and Deanna Represent GB on the World Stage

We’re proud to share a fantastic update from two of our Halo Sports Foundation athletes, Paul and Deanna Mammatt, who have had a very successful year competing for Team GB in Duathlon.

Earlier this year, Paul and Deanna received a Halo Sports Foundation award – and they’ve certainly put it to great use! The duo compete in the sport of Duathlon, a demanding multi-discipline race that includes a 5km run, a 20km bike ride, followed by a second 2.5km run.

To earn the honour of representing Great Britain, both Paul and Deanna had to qualify through UK-based selection races the previous year. These events are highly competitive, with only top finishers securing their place on the national team.

In April, they travelled to Rumia, Poland, for the Age Group European Championships. The course was mostly flat and very fast – helped along by chilly but sunny conditions. Paul finished a strong 13th in the M55-59 category, while Deanna claimed an impressive 8th place in the F50-54 category.

Most recently, they took on the World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain – a very different challenge! With warm temperatures and a much hillier course, both the run and bike legs included steep climbs and rapid descents through the historic town and surrounding countryside. Paul finished 37th in his category and Deanna came in 13th – a fantastic achievement in a fiercely competitive field.

It was a milestone moment for Deanna, who completed her very first World Championships, having previously raced at three European events. Meanwhile, Paul added to his extensive GB racing résumé – this being his 20th appearance for the national team since 2018, equalling his second-best ever result.

“We’re extremely grateful for the support from the Halo Sports Foundation,” Paul shared. “It’s been a successful year for us both and a real privilege to wear the GB kit on the world stage.”
