The Friendship Workout might be the healthiest of the season...

Since 2011 July 30th has been recognised as International Friendship Day by the United Nations, but still - 13 years later - not everyone has understood its power and potential for their health.

So this year we want to encourage you to go bold, big, and better in the way you celebrate the enormous health benefits of even the simplest of connections with others. Be ready to give and receive here, and to get things started on this best of workouts we'd like to remind you that...

1. Even short, daily social connection counts, and can buffer against stress and lonliness. Use this month to practise greeting others in a positive way. Ask how they're doing while you pass in the changing rooms, or swap places in the gym. See the smiles you inspire and feel the difference it makes to you.

2. There are ways to build on these new connections, too. Remember everyone finds making new friends difficult, especially if they've little time in between work and family commitments, or have moved to a new area or new job. The experts recommend you go where people gather, and we recommend Halo because we see so many people connect while they're enjoying their gym session or swim or class. Way easier than walking into a pub on your own. This month try reaching out to people you've enjoyed chatting to while you're here, or simply got used to saying hi to when you walk in and out of a class. Maybe fix a date to try a new class together or to go for a coffee after your regular session. It will benefit your workouts as well as your wellbeing as evidence shows those who work out with friends work out for longer.

3. Good quality friendships grow slowly so give them time. But they will  help protect against mental health and wellbeing issues like anxiety and depression. Note the word quality (ie there's respect, kindness, listening and loyalty) - this is not necessarily about the quantity of time you spend together.

Let us know how you go this month and - when it comes to July 30th - share a selfie of you and your new gym and class buddies with the hashtag #halomakesfriends
