Halo National Exercise Referral Scheme

GP recommends you do some exercise?

If you have a health condition, are at risk of developing chronic disease, or are recovering from an operation or injury and haven’t exercised for a long time, your doctor may recommend you start to do some physical activity to improve your health and wellbeing. We know that, for you, this may be a worrying time and getting more physically active can be challenging. Be assured that our registered exercise professionals will find an activity that’s just right for you and then offer one-to-one support to gently increase your activity levels and quickly improve your overall health.

National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS) - supporting people back to good health

What is the National Exercise Referral Scheme?

It exists to support people (aged 16 and over) who are at risk of developing chronic disease by referring them to a high quality, supervised 16 week exercise programme to improve their health and wellbeing.

Halo offers a NERS programme at centres in Bridgend County Borough and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough.

What happens after referral?

Once you are referred, one of our Exercise Professionals will meet with you to find out a little more about your health history, carry out some basic health checks and discuss the range of activities that are suitable for you. They will then continue to help and support you throughout the scheme.

As part of the scheme you will benefit from:

  • A consultation and subsequent checkups with a fully qualified, specially trained Exercise Professional.
  • A variety of activities at a discounted price for the 16 weeks you are on the scheme.

The scheme offers you the opportunity to build more physical activity into your life by taking part in fun, gentle activity sessions such as:

  • Strength and Balance
  • Weight management
  • Gym sessions
  • Aqua Therapy
  • Gentle exercise classes
  • Walking groups
  • Tai Chi

Don’t worry if it’s been some time since you have taken part in physical activity – a fully qualified exercise specialist will provide support, advice and encouragement.
