Social enterprise and charity organisation, Halo Leisure marked a significant milestone for one of its Feel Good for Life members, Emily McNamara, who recently reached the grand age of 101 years.
Emily was born in Pontypool on 7th September 1918, moved to Maesteg when she was a teenager and married her husband when she was 24. A birthday event for her was held at Maesteg Sports Centre, as part of the weekly Feel Good for Life sessions, where her granddaughter, great-granddaughter and great-great-grandson, as well as Bridgend Community Dementia Team, Awen, and Halo, celebrated with Feel Good for Life group. Awen Library Manager, Elaine Winstanley presented Mrs. McNamara a facsimile of the front page of the Western Mail that was published on the day of her birth. Emily then enjoyed her weekly game of Curling, and chatted with Feel Good for Life participants over a cup of tea and a slice of an especially designed 101st birthday cake.
The Feel Good for Life programme aims to provide opportunities for older people with dementia, depression or loneliness and their carers to be active and to socialise.
The group is supported by Bridgend Community Dementia team, who provide information, signposting and advice to attendees, their families and carers.
Halo Leisure Active Communities Manager, Ryan Statton said: “there is a wealth of evidence which highlights how remaining active and socially stimulated can enhance our health and well-being in old age. Emily is a shining example of that and a real inspiration to us all”
Emily celebrated her 101 years being always on the go, keeping active, not watching the news and enjoying a tipple of sherry now and then and that is the advice that Emily McNamara gives if you want to reach your centenary.
The Feel Good for Life programme has been formed with the support of an award from the National Lottery Community Fund (formerly known as The Big Lottery Fund) in Wales and Peter Harrison Foundation has also kindly helped to fund the programme.
