Essential Tips for Staying Water Safe This Season!

Stay Warm, Stay Bright, and Stay Safe Near the Water!

The clocks have officially gone back, the evenings are drawing in, and there’s a crisp winter chill in the air! While there’s nothing quite like a brisk winter walk wrapped up in your favourite scarf, the colder months bring unique hazards around our local canals, rivers, and lakes.

In fact, according to the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), around one in five drownings in the UK happen during winter. To help keep your family and four-legged friends safe this season, we’ve put together a few simple, life-saving tips:

Winter Water Safety: What You Need to Know

  • Stop & Think: Frosty banks and towpaths can become dangerously slippery, and daylight fades fast. Stick to well-lit paths, wear sensible footwear with plenty of grip, and remember: never step onto frozen water or ice, no matter how thick it looks.

  • Stay Together: Keep children close by and within sight, and keep dogs on a lead when walking near icy banks or open water. If a pet does run onto the ice, never venture out after them; call for help instead.

  • Float to Live: If you, or someone else, unexpectedly end up in cold water, fight the instinct to thrash. Stay calm, lean back with your ears submerged, and float until the cold shock passes, then call for help.
