A New Lease on Life: How Joint Care Helped David Reclaim Mobility

David recently completed our Joint Care class on 1st April, having first joined us in January at our Bridgend group, which meets on Wednesday afternoons.
When David began, he relied on a mobility scooter to get around, as walking any distance — even to the activity room near the bowls hall — was too difficult. He admitted feeling apprehensive about attending the class at first, but within a couple of weeks, it became a regular habit. He began to look forward to Wednesdays and the sense of purpose and routine the sessions gave him.

One aspect David found particularly beneficial was the food labelling sessions. He now makes a conscious effort to read nutritional labels before deciding whether a food item is suitable for him. This small but significant change has helped him take greater control of his health.

David made excellent progress throughout the programme, and the results spoke for themselves. By the final session, he was no longer using his mobility scooter — instead, he walked into the classroom with the help of a walking stick and even managed to climb the stairs, something he hadn’t been able to do for quite some time.

The improvements extended beyond his mobility. David shared that he no longer needs to ask his grandson for help with everyday tasks, as he is now able to manage independently. He described the programme as having “given me a boost to kick-start my life.”

David is now continuing his journey by attending our lower limb exercise class, a natural progression from the activities in the Joint Care programme. His story is a testament to the difference that targeted exercise and lifestyle education can make for those living with joint discomfort and mobility challenges.
