Halo’s mission to help the community to be ‘more active, more often’ is at the centre of everything we do and as such we’re happy to support local sportswomen and sportsmen.

Fleur Hawthorne, 44, from Gloucestershire has proved that it’s never too late to get fit. The mother of three says “I was nearly 40 when I had a wake-up call, I felt unfit and overweight (I have since lost 5 stone through my determination to succeed) so needed to give myself a better chance in life.”

Since then, Fleur has undertaken many physical challenges including a triathlon, two half marathons and ‘Race in The Sun’ (a 26-mile bike ride up Pen-Y-Fan, followed by a 3-mile canoe and an additional 26-mile cycle).

But Fleur’s upcoming challenge this September is set to be a different kettle of fish altogether - she is attempting to swim the English Channel to raise funds for the Great Western Air Ambulance and ‘It’s In The Bag’ testicular cancer charity.

Braving the tides

Fleur’s training is well under way, having already completed many outdoor cold swims (including the Dart 10km last September). To support her mission, Halo has provided Fleur with free membership whilst she undertakes rigorous training at Ross Swimming Pool with help from trainer Ian.

Exercise is going well - I swim or visit the gym 6 days a week averaging an hour per visit and this is building up.” She says “It's hard to fit home life, work and training all in and it upsets me when home suffers but my kids are great and know how important it is for me.”

When she’s not working on her stroke and speed in Ross pool, she spends her time river and quarry swimming as a way of acclimatising herself to the cooler water temperatures. On the channel swim itself, she will be escorted by an experienced pilot boat crew who will ensure her safety on her journey.
